Hotel Hoffmeister and Golf: Czech golf grew from three roots. The first is tied in with the family of Baron František Ringhoffer. The second root, to a certain degree connected to the first, was the activities of the later founders of the first Czech golf club in Prague. Here again the missionary activities of the British ambassador Sir G.R. Clerk had a significant role to play. He, along with Jaroslav Jahn and the previously mentioned F. Ringhoffer, were the main characters taking part in the birth of Golf Club Praha. The third root was the golfing activities of a small group of new lawyers and their friends, which began in 1923. That was the year that Adolf Hoffmeister, Jaroslav Hilbert and Jaroslav O. Franta brought over a set of old golf clubs and, together with the Sedlák brothers and Jiří Chvojka, started to try out golf on the meadows near Stránčice. These activities led to the birth of the second Czech golf club, that being Golf klub Líšnice.
